Spread the love

The Argentinian family-owned gelato shop, FRÍO Gelato®, opened its doors in October 2018 in the eclectic, vibrant north side neighborhood of Andersonville (5152 N. Clark). Attracted by the area’s neighborhood focus and commitment to supporting small businesses, FRÍO Gelato® is becoming a culinary anchor within the community. As its third gelato shop in the Chicagoland area, FRÍO Gelato® is sweetening up the corners of Foster and Clark, as it continues to artfully bring Argentina’s gelato tradition to the U.S.

Welcome to Andersonville’s FRÍO Gelato®

The business was started by owners, married couple Sebastián and Karla Koziura, along with Sebastián’s cousin, Enrique Schcolnik. Mr. Koziura and Mr. Schcolnik both came to the United States twenty years ago, and they were not able to find gelato here like they could back home in Argentina. Just like in Argentina, they wanted their gelato in America to be traditional, cultural and family- oriented. Gelato is changing the way Chicagoans experience dessert and adding a new FRÍO Gelato® to Andersonville is off to a great start. It is a wonderful to have an all natural, healthy yet delicious alternative when you get a sweet tooth craving-you won’t have to feel guilty!

There are is a large variety of mouthwatering gelato flavors to choose from at FRÍO Gelato® including blackberry, strawberry, milk caramel, chocolate, mascarpone cheese with raspberry swirl, figs and cognac, vanilla, malbec wine and berries, coconut, lemon, egg custard with Marsala wine, coffee and chocolate chip with milk caramel. There is also dairy-free sorbet that comes in chocolate, passion fruit and berry. (When summertime hits Chicago, get your wallets out for seasonal flavors such as avocado)!

Sebastián and Karla’s daughter helps out frequently in the shop. When you enter she welcomes you with a smile and a scooper all ready for your gelato order. The overall space is clean and simple, with a focus, on the gelato. Dark chocolate brown walls feature photographs of gelato scoops and flights and white writing. At the front counter are cup and serving size samples and prices.

When my friend and I visited, the daughter was very helpful when helping us make decisions over the flavors of gelato we wanted to try. It was hard because everything looked wonderful. We each ended up sampling every flavor offered and each ordered a gelato flight, which allows you four scoops of gelato served in tiny cups. My flight consisted of my favorite flavors I tried (chocolate sorbet and chocolate chip with caramel, figs and cognac, and cheese with raspberry swirl gelato). My friend had the coffee, malbec wine and berries, mascarpone cheese with raspberry swirl and and figs and cognac gelato).

I ordered a pint of dark chocolate and passion fruit sorbet to go, so I could savor the delicious, creamy and low-guilt dessert at my home. Also, my friend ordered a passion fruit scoop cup dipped in dark chocolate shell to go, which was very satisfying to watch as it was dipped and the chocolate hardened into a shell. What a wonderful experience at Andersonville’s new FRÍO Gelato®!
