On Thursday, April 26, 2018, in Austin, Texas was the celebration of the “Platinum Anniversary” of the UMLAUF Garden Party, one of Austin’s favorite and first rated annual springtime events of the city. Austin had beautiful weather during the evening of the event as spring was in full bloom, and what better way to enjoy one the most charming and magical parties in Texas surrounded with stimulating art, music, wine, beer, cocktails, and delightful cuisine, in addition to visionary items lined up for bid at the live and silent auction. The UMLAUF Garden Party raised nearly $270,000 to benefit the Museum’s community programs, exhibitions and to preserve the Garden.

Austin has won again the title this year as the “Best Place to Live in America,” according to U.S. News & World Report and the 2018 UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum was a huge success. The UMLAUF Garden Party is unlike any other event in Austin. The attendants enjoyed an evening strolling through the the largest outdoor “art-in-nature” collection of noted sculptor and long-time Austin resident Charles Umlauf to enjoy selective wines and tasty bites from Austin’s best and most acclaimed restaurants including Bullfight, Bliss Délice, Daily Juice Cafe, Fara Coffee, Fluff Meringues & More, GoodPop, Grand Lux Cafe, Juliet Italian Kitchen, Julie Myrtille Bakery, Juniper, Komé Sushi Kitchen, Lake Austin Spa Resort, Maudie’s Tex-Mex, MAX’s Wine Dive, Mongers Market + Kitchen, Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill, North Italia, Olive & June, P.F. Chang’s, Truluck’s Seafood, Steak, and Crab House, TRACE and many more.

The guests enjoyed the incredible music of-of Nash Hernandez Orchestra.

The “UMLAUF Garden Party” proceeds benefited the UMLAUF’s world-class exhibitions and education programs. UMLAUF provides direct access to the arts for more than 50,000 visitors annually and free admission and tours to over 4,500 Central Texas school children to learn about the artistic legacy of Charles Umlauf through workshops, lectures, Kidkraft, Camp UMLAUF, and collaborations with other local art and community organizations. The guests at the party had the magnificent opportunity to bid on the most unique and visionary items during the live and silent auction to name a few: Tito’s Central Texas Adventure, Soulful & Suite Package, Hawaii Getaway, Dinner at the home of Charles UMLAUF, “Only Comes Out at Night” (a 24×48 signed, original mixed media painting on a metal canvas signed Gary Clark Jr. Guitar donated by Antone’s Nightclub & Gary Clark Jr), and plenty of wine from “Wild about Wine.”
UMLAUF Mission
“The UMLAUF Sculpture Garden & Museum exhibits the work of Charles Umlauf, his influences, and other contemporary sculptors in a natural setting, and provides educational experiences that encourage the understanding and appreciation of sculpture.”
UMLAUF Vision
“In 1944, Charles and Angeline Umlauf purchased a carriage house that became their home at the top of a hill overlooking Barton Springs Road. In 1985, they gifted their home, property, his art studio and 168 sculptures to the City of Austin for public enjoyment and education. Landscape architect Aan Coleman designed the Garden and the internationally recognized architect Lawrence Speck designed the UMLAUF’s gallery and terrace that opened in 1991. The Roberta Crenshaw learning center was added to our site in 2001.
Since its founding just over 30 years ago, the UMLAUF has been committed to art education in one of the most picturesque settings in Austin. As our collection and grounds have grown, so have our ambitions. The goal is to become one beautiful, approachable and accessible venue with a number of programmatic offerings to support the UMLAUF as a top destination in Austin.
The UMLAUF will become the arts destination in Austin to learn, play and reflect. Our vision is to make the entire eight-acres accessible and available to the public, connecting Charles Umlauf’s artist studio, the Umlauf family home and property to the existing Museum and Sculpture Garden. We seek to make improvements to the grounds, expand the permanent collection, and broaden our ability for rotating exhibitions and community activities. We will pursue community and other support to prepare for and expand the Museum.
As a culturally rich arts destination, the UMLAUF envisions using its expanded collection and facilities to increase awareness of Charles Umlauf’s impact and influence as an artist, educator and philanthropist, and to honor the Umlauf family’s gift to the community by providing experiences that include art in nature, immersive exhibitions and educational opportunities, health and wellness programs, a venue for gatherings and events, and a peaceful breathing space within the heart of an urban capital city.”
